Study groups are low cost, flexible, casual, and high quality opportunities to train in an intimate small group environment with your instructor and fellow students of a variety of skill levels. Study Groups are a hybrid between private custom training, which can be prohibitively expensive, and open enrollment group classes, which can be busy and chaotic and at inconvenient times. If you have scheduling flexibility and you want to train in a semi-private and more intimate manner for a wide variety of topics, consider joining our new Study Group program.
To join this Home Defense Shotgun Study Group, please submit your range fee using the online checkout on this page, and contact Brian at firstname.lastname@example.org for questions.
9am to 4pm
Field Sports Park 200 yard range
9580 Malech Rd, San Jose, CA 95138
We’ll meet at the 200 yard range and review of what folks succeeded and struggled with on the last field trip, we will discuss in great detail rifle setup, troubleshooting, zeroing, ammunition selection, and fundamental shooting technique. We will then break into groups to zero rifles, to practice on paper at 100 or 200 yards, and to chronograph our rifles and ammunition.
By the end of the day you should have a much clearer understanding of how to practice with your rifle, how to collect data to track your progress, how to calculate ballistic trajectory using the manufacturer provided ballistic coefficient for your projectile and muzzle velocity data that we will collect together.
Students should be familiar with firearm safety.
Water, snacks, sun screen, close toe shoes, eye and ear protection. Dress for outdoor activity (we hold class rain or shine). You may bring and shoot your personal rifle if you wish, or I can supply one for you free of charge.
You will need at least one rifle, which I can supply for you if you wish. If you wish to practice with and collect data on two rifles, now is a great opportunity. You can consider practicing with a smaller rifle, and less expensive ammunition, since at our distance we do not need the additional ballistic performance of expensive long range projectiles.
Bring a few hundred rounds to practice with, whatever you wish to shoot. As usual, bring the tools necessary to mount and zero your scope and to maintain your rifle.
I can provide you with ammunition to train with. Calibers available: 22 Long Rifle, .223 Remington, 300AAC Blackout, .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Winchester, 30-06 Springfield, 300 Winchester Magnum. Other calibers available upon request.
As with all study group classes, this class is funded by donation. The purpose of this is to give you the flexibility to pay what you feel is affordable and worthwhile for the training, yet still bring in enough revenues to allow our classes to sustain into the future.
I ask that you find an amount that is comfortable for you somewhere between $40 to $150 per person. Cash, check, Venmo, PayPal, Google Pay, credit card, etc are all accepted. Donations of equipment or ammunition for use as loaners in the future are also appreciated and accepted.
The facility fee is $20 per person (as long as we have a minimum of 13 people attend), which we will collect right here on the website at time of registration.
Ammunition is separate from tuition. The range does not sell ammunition. I can bring ammunition to share with you for $0.24-$1.00 per round, depending on caliber and load. There is no background check required to share ammunition. Please contact me by email or phone to discuss so I can prepare ahead of time for you.
