Description

Study groups are low cost, flexible, casual, and high quality opportunities to train in an intimate small group environment with your instructor and fellow students of a variety of skill levels. Study Groups are a hybrid between private custom training, which can be prohibitively expensive, and open enrollment group classes, which can be busy and chaotic and at inconvenient times. If you have scheduling flexibility and you want to train in a semi-private and more intimate manner for a wide variety of topics, consider joining our new Study Group program.

To join the Southern California Precision Rifle Study Group field trip, please submit $1 using the online checkout on this page, and contact Brian at info@monarchdefense.org for questions. Of course, $1 is not the cost of the event, rather it is symbolic that you have made a commitment to making this trip a success, and that I should also commit my time and resources to helping you succeed. You’ve got skin in the game, so to speak, and I’m not going to drive all the way down there and slave away preparing rifle and ammunition and targets and facilities all for naught.

Time:
Sunrise to sunset, which mean’s you may need to leave very early to get there on time. Optionally, you can camp out overnight with me. Contact me for details.

Location:
Central valley 2-2.5 hours north of Los Angeles, and about 4 hours south of San Jose. Call or email me for more details and information, and to arrange carpools. We will have carpools heading south from the bay area, as well as heading north from LA.

Overview:
You’ll meet with your carpool leader at a location and time you guys negotiate. Then, we will meet at a pre-planned rendezvous area at sunrise. Then we will caravan out to the field area where I have staging and target locations already scouted out. There, we will set out targets to confirm zero at 100 yards, set up targets at varying distances, and engage them until you run out of ammo or daylight. Then we’ll clean up targets and head home. If you want, we can stop for dinner along the way. I can bring MRE’s for lunch for everyone if you want, let me know in advance so i can prepare for you.

By the end of the day you should have collected lots of real data on your trajectory at a variety of distances, and learned how to range a target, judge wind, spot your partner’s shot, and communicate with your partner.

Prerequisites:
Students should be familiar with firearm safety. Some experience using a rifle is beneficial.

Required Equipment:
Water, snacks, sun screen, close toe shoes, eye and ear protection. Dress for outdoor activity (we hold class rain or shine). You may bring and shoot your personal rifle, or I can supply one for you free of charge.

You should use match grade factory or handloaded ammunition with a high ballistic coefficient, a telescopic sight with a milling reticle with external elevation adjustment in miliradians or minutes of angle.

Bring 100 hundred rounds or more of the same ammo to the field, and work with me ahead of time if you need guidance zeroing your rifle and grouping consistently. As usual, bring the tools necessary to mount and zero your scope and to maintain your rifle.

Regarding caliber, any caliber will work, so long as your ammunition is of high quality. .223 is typically the smallest caliber that I would recommend, but students with a small 10.5″ barrel .223 caliber rifle with quality ammunition can and do make hits out past 800 yards. If all you have is an AR15, practice practice practice and bring it, with quality heavy for caliber match ammunition of course. Any larger caliber, with a quality rifle, with the correct type of scope, and you will have a great time. The equipment need not be expensive. Contact me with more questions.

I can provide you with ammunition to train with. Calibers available: .223 Remington, 6.5 Grendel, .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Winchester, 30-06 Springfield, 300 Winchester Magnum, etc. all available.

Cost:
As with all study group classes, this class is funded by donation. The purpose of this is to give you the flexibility to pay what you feel is affordable and worthwhile for the training, yet still bring in enough revenues to allow our classes to sustain into the future.

I ask that you find an amount that is comfortable for you somewhere between $40 to $150 per person. Cash, check, Venmo, PayPal, Google Pay, credit card, etc are all accepted. Donations of equipment or ammunition for use as loaners in the future are also appreciated and accepted. If cost is a deciding factor for you, then don’t stress it. Chip in for fuel, and whatever else you can comfortably afford, and pay it forward another day in another way, perhaps by a referral, a positive online review, or take some pictures for us for social media.

The trip fee is $1 per person which we will collect right here on the website at time of registration.

If you would like me to bring match ammo to share with you, talk with me about what caliber and load you need, as prices for components vary greatly. There is no background check required to share ammunition. Please contact me by email or phone to discuss so I can prepare ahead of time for you.
